Really nice work boot / lineman boot
Review by Rocky M. on 22 May 2020 review stating Really nice work boot / lineman boot
Bought to use as everyday work boots. Don't have a specific occupation I wear the boots for but I am also not easy on my footwear. _x000D_
Coming from a pair of Justin Miner boots. Basically the same specs (comp toe, waterproof, 400g insulation). The Powerline are much much nicer. _x000D_
The liners are nice. Can be worn with short or long socks without rubbing funny on your leg etc. The leather they are made with seems very nice. Triple stitched where it needs to be. Sole is really nice. Hard but the rubber compound is soft enough to grip easily and well on rocks etc. I took the stock insoles out because lets be frank all stock insoles suck. Replaced them with my trusty superfeet insoles. _x000D_
On the foot the boot is true-ish to size. I wear a 10.5 in Justin and Chippewa and Frye boots and the Powerline are pretty much the same "length". _x000D_
They do seem a bit narrow for the given width (I am a D width). This is not a big deal because they will pack out a bit and the leather will stretch and form to my foot. _x000D_
The ankle area and metatarsal area is more form fitting than other slip on boots. They almost fit like a lace up boot ankle down. Really nice. The area above the ankle is spacious. Like other reviewers have noted getting the boot inside your pants is tough. Ariat either needs to make specific pants for these or make the upper portion of the boot by the calf less wide. I imagine they made it wider so people with larger / wider feet could get their foot in and out easily because the lower area is a tighter fit compared to other pull on style work boots. _x000D_
Straight away I put nikwax waterproofing wax on the leather areas. Not sure why companies don't pre treat their boots like that. Made a $250 boot look like a $400 fine Italian boot in a matter of minutes. Also softened up the leather a bit for proper break in. _x000D_
I wore them straight out of the box after waxing for a few hours working around the house and they were super comfortable. I would imagine they will break in quickly and become even nicer on the foot. _x000D_
I do not do any kind of lineman work or pole climbing so I doubt I will ever test how well they do that. The lineman sole/heal does not feel that much different than a normal work boot/hiking boot. I don't think I will have any issue wearing these boots for all sorts of activities or walking around in them longer distances. I live in the mountains so having a sturdy boot that is warm and waterproof and that will not slip easily on snow or rocks is really important. _x000D_
_x000D_
Also to note. The welt is sewn to what appears to be a piece of leather or some other sort of fibrous synthetic material...NOT some plastic piece like a lot of other boot companies use on cheaper boots. My Justin Miner boots had plastic around the welt. After a year of use the plastic cracked and water / dirt could get in between the leather and sole of the boot. Hopefully the Powerline boots hold up better. Leather or a fibrous synthetic material is best so you can wax it as well and keep that part of the boot hydrated to prevent cracking or failure from dry rot. _x000D_
_x000D_
These boots are really nice compared to similar work boots in the genre. If the welt/sole holds up I foresee myself using them for a long time. _x000D_
_x000D_
Really the only minus on these is the insanely wide top of the boot. Doesn't make them feel bad but you will need to search for a wider pair of pants so you don't look like a knob when you get out of your car and your pants are glued to the top of the boots causing you to bend down and adjust it. Tucking your pants in the boot? No that is not an option for really anyone. _x000D_
I would also probably put some padding on the shin area. Could have it sewn or molded right into the leather there. Would provide some extra protection because why not?

Most comfortable winter boots I have. Been wearing about 3 months. Great support, good traction, holds up against the dirt/grease/liquids. Everywhere I go guys ask me where I got them.

I have been waiting for a boot like this as most of us wear pull ons even when we climb everyday. Y'all should definitely come out with a square toe though. I know a lot of lineman that would buy them here in Texas if they were square composite toe.
